My two children inspire me every day. Their imaginative play, creativity, learning, and love for soft toys has sparked my own creativity and recently inspired me to begin my soft toy pattern business, Softiez. My children enjoy participating in the design process for my business, from picking out fabric or yarn colours to ‘fluffing’ up the stuffing, and are delighted to see a finished toy made from their design ideas.
When my children were toddlers, they each had a favourite soft toy. Now that they’re older, they still have the same treasured favourite. Toy designers and makers want their creations to be loved from childhood through to adulthood. This love is the ultimate goal of designers and makers. Yes, I realize it may not be the only goal, but as a designer, it is my number one goal.
My son’s favourite toy has always been a soft toy dog that he calls Mimmy. The tag on the toy said Nippey, but my son couldn’t pronounce it when he was a baby, so the name became Mimmy.
Here is a photo of Mimmy:
The one on the left is what Mimmy looked like when new. The one on the right is what Mimmy looks like now. The years of love are evident.
It’s this kind of love that I hope will happen when someone makes a soft toy from one of my patterns: for that soft toy to become a child’s best friend, to comfort him or her at night, to silently listen to secrets and to help wipe away tears.
That’s my ultimate goal as a soft toy designer.
Do you or someone close to you have a treasured soft toy from childhood? I’d love to hear your stories and see photos!
Welcome! My name is Lisa Bosch, and I'm the soft toy designer of Softiez patterns.
